Feathering the line is a way of controlling the line leaving a fishing reel during a cast. The speed of line leaving the reel is controlled to prevent tangles, and to allow the end tackle to land correctly on the water.
Feather line when casting
- On a fixed spool reel feathering done by lightly touching the front lip of the spool, allowing the line to flick from under your finger.
- Without feathering the end tackle lands in a heap and with a splash, If the rig is allowed to land like this there is a high chance of tangles.
- With feathering the rig lands straight with no chance of a tangle.
- Multiplier reels will tangle (birds nest) if allowed to over run on the cast.
